Adherence

Why your clients don't use your app (and how to fix it)

June 16, 2026 7 min

You send the perfect program. Volume dialed in, clean progression, a video for every exercise. And a week later, when you check in, half your clients haven't opened it once.

It's easy to read that as a lack of commitment. But before you blame motivation, look at the path you're asking them to walk just to start.

Adherence isn't a motivation problem

We tend to assume the client who doesn't train is the client who doesn't want to. Sometimes that's true. But far more often, the client wanted to, opened the email, saw "download the app," and that's where the intention died.

Every step you put between your client and their workout is a door. And every door loses people. Not because they're weak, but because real life is full of interruptions. The baby cries, the phone rings, the work break ends. If training requires remembering a password they set three weeks ago, most people leave it for "later." And "later" never comes.

The uncomfortable truth

Every extra step before the first workout costs you clients. Installing an app, creating an account and remembering a password are three doors in a row. Plenty of people don't make it past the first.

The real culprit: entry friction

Think about a new client's first day on most platforms:

  • 1They get an email with a link to "join."
  • 2It asks them to download an app from the store.
  • 3They wait for it to install.
  • 4They open the app and it asks them to create an account.
  • 5They invent a password. Or don't, and reuse one they already have.
  • 6Maybe they have to verify their email.
  • 7Finally, they see their workout.
  • Seven steps before the first squat. And worse: every time they come back, if they forgot the password, they repeat half the list. Friction isn't just a first-day problem. It's a daily one.

Your program can be excellent, but if the client has to wrestle with technology to see it, the program doesn't exist.

    How to actually fix it

The good news is that friction is the most fixable problem you have. It doesn't depend on anyone's willpower. It depends on design.

  • Remove the install. If your client can see their workout in the browser, with no trip to the app store, you've removed the most expensive door.
  • Remove the password. Passwords are pure friction for someone who just wants to see three exercises. A link-based or short-code entry turns seven steps into one.
  • Bring the workout to them, not the other way around. The best reminder doesn't say "open the app." It says "here's today's workout" with one tap that opens it directly.
  • Make the first workout visible in seconds. The first day sets the habit. If getting in is instant, they come back. If it's a hassle, they don't.
  • Don't turn consistency into a test of technical patience. Make it the path of least resistance.

Measure the door, not just the workout

If you have clients who never log in, don't only ask "why aren't you training?" Ask "how do you get in to see your program?" You'll often discover the problem was never the exercise. It was that they couldn't remember how to reach it.

    What we blame

    • "No motivation"
    • "Doesn't care"
    • "Inconsistent"

    What's really happening

    • Can't remember the password
    • The app was never installed
    • Every login is a fight

When you remove the friction, you discover something that's almost always true: your clients did want to. You just gave them too many doors.

That's why in Axion the client enters with a link from their email, no password, no install. They open the email, tap the link, and they're in, looking at today's workout. The hardest part of adherence, the starting part, simply disappears. You keep sending excellent programs; they finally see them.
